What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering uses principles of physics and mathematics to create and maintain mechanical systems. Anything with moving parts is a mechanical system. Mechanical systems are maintained by mechanical engineers because of their ability to design and analyse them. It is arguably the most versatile of the engineering disciplines. There are many aspects to to it and it is used in many industries to solve issues often related to the reliability of materials within a moving system.

How do you become a Mechanical Engineer?

In order to become a mechanical engineer, you must obtain the degree. The qualifications you will need are an A level in Math, Physics and preferably one other science as well. The grades needed to study mechanical engineering at university vary but generally 2 B grades and a C grade is the minimum requirement.

What are the career prospects for a Mechanical Engineer?

The career prospects for a mechanical engineer are very promising. The versatility of the course means that you will not find it hard to find a job role. The world uses mechanical parts to power several things we use everyday. From the cars we drive to the planes we fly; mechanical systems are essential to everyday life. Not only do we use products that contain mechanical systems in our everyday lives but we also use mechanical systems to power the machines used to manufacture these products. This is why mechanical engineers will always have a purpose; they play a key role in how everything is put together. You can expect a starting salary of £24,000 – £28,000 per year. More experienced mechanical engineers can earn well above £40,000 per year.

What is a Mechanical Engineering Degree like to study?

Mechanical engineering degree will vary depending on the university however the majority of courses will be assessed through examinations. There will be an element of practical work on a mechanical engineering degree however this may vary depending on the university. Coursework is also likely to pay a key role in your studies as well. There will be a practical element to your degree studies and this will be key. When you combine your practical skills with technical knowledge you can become a well-rounded engineer. You will also come across mechanical engineering software such as SolidWorks, Microsoft Excel and CAD software. Software based studying is likely to be taught as part of modelling and simulation modules.

Mechanical Engineering Chartership

The chartership body for mechanical engineers is the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). In order to become a chartered mechanical engineer you will need to have a masters degree (MEng) in mechanical engineering and some industry experience. The IMechE state that you must be able to demonstrate your ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems in order to complete your chartered engineer status. If you want to learn more about becoming a chartered mechanical engineer visit the IMechE official website.
